The term 'widening participation' is used to refer to schemes aimed at helping young people from groups in society who are currently under represented at university and in professional careers. Their aim is to level the playing field with those from more advantaged backgrounds and to help open up more and better opportunities and career prospects to all. These scheme therefore will each have their own very specific eligibility criteria to you'll need to check you meet in order to apply.
These types of criteria usually begin with those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, often identified as those receiving free school meals (now or in recent years), or with household incomes below a certain threshold. Some will only be open to those attending a non-selective state school (which Thomas Tallis is) and usually meet one or more criteria, such as you representing the first generation in your family to attend university (if that were to be chosen route). be either a full-time or part-time care giver, living or have lived in care, be from a specific ethnic background, have come to the UK as a refugee or asylum seeker, etc.
